What is the online learning experience like?

Enhanced Engagement

Online learning is engaged learning. In fact, many students tend to be more engaged when taking an online course versus attending a course in person. In the online classroom, every student has a voice and the platform to have their opinions heard.

The Learning Management System (LMS)

Online courses are hosted in a learning management system, also known as an LMS. These user-friendly platforms have similarities to popular social networks, like Facebook, and encourage student interaction as well as team collaboration. The LMS can also be accessed across multiple devices, such as a personal computer, tablet, or even mobile phone.

All fully online courses and web-supported course sites are provided via Canvas, our learning management system. Students log in to Canvas using their JHED login ID and password. This is the same ID and password used for course registration in SIS, remote library access, etc. For information on JHED login, course site addresses, technical assistance, and many of the Johns Hopkins digital resources, students can visit advanced.jhu.edu/students. Students registering for online courses should be sure to sign up for their Johns Hopkins University email account and use this account for all JHU business and academic matters.

Diverse Student Body

Not only does online learning allow you to attend a world-class university like Johns Hopkins from anywhere in the world, but it also connects you to a diverse student population. In the online classroom, your classmates may reside all over the country and even abroad. This brings an extremely rich and rewarding perspective to course topics, team assignments, and weekly discussions. It also further strengthens your professional network outside your immediate geographic location.

Online Learning Tools

Online courses consist of lively discussion forums where you can debate topics, assess current events in real time, and address questions posed by your instructor and your fellow students. Online learning has come a long way in the last five years. Classes can feature interactive simulations, HD video content, multimedia presentations, and immersive visuals. Have a question for your instructor? With online learning, your professor is just an email away.
